1. Start with a rectangular piece of barstock. In this case, we're using 5/16" x 3/4", the most common size for handmade horseshoes. Put the end of the barstock approximately 3/4" onto the anvil face and forge it down using half-face blows.

2.& 3. Put the barstock over the opposite edge of the anvil, extending it about 1 1/2" over the edge and forge it down, with half-face blows as well.

4. Straighten it out over the horn of the anvil.

5. This is what the first phase should look like.
